The San Jerardo farmworker housing community will get help to improve the quality of its water supply after a state water board approved nearly $2 million in funding for the project.
The State Water Control Resource board unanimously approved the funding last week. San Jerardo, situated just south of Salinas, has fought for two years to get government officials to address the high levels of nitrates and other health hazardous pollutants in its water supply.
Assemblyman Luis Alejo, D-Watsonville, introduced AB 1221 to address the water problem.
The state Cleanup and Abatement Account is funding the project. The account provides money to help communities address pollution problems.
