WOODBURN, OR–The meeting starts at 6 p.m. Thursday at the offices of the PCUN [Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste] farmworkers union, 300 Young St., Woodburn. Similar meetings are planned for April 7 in Portland and April 12 in Redmond.
A coalition including PCUN, Northwest Workers Justice Project, Rural Organizing Project, Oregon Center for Public Policy and others is seeking stories to bolster legislative efforts to prevent unfair employment practices and enable workers to recover unpaid wages. Advocates say that the increasing use of contracted, temporary or part-time workers is leading to abuse.
“Wage theft drives down standards for all workers as honest employers are forced to compete with cheaters who cut corners,” said Ramon Ramirez, PCUN’s president.
