Farm Worker Justice Event

Location: St. Mathew Catholic Church, 5401 Loch Raven Blvd, Baltimore, MD

Join Baltimore Food & Faith for a panel discussion on a very important issue related to “good food”: farm worker justice.

The sustainable food movement highlights the importance of buying local and organic, of ensuring that animals raised for meat are treated humanely, and of the need for all consumers to have easy access to healthy, fresh, affordable foods. Much less discussed are the people who labor in the fields to grow our food and the difficulties they can face. This panel will ask, “Does it matter whether a tomato is local and organic if it was harvested by people who make so little money they cannot feed themselves, or who work under slave-like conditions?”

Leading the discussion will be Dr. Robert Gottlieb, Director of the Urban and Environmental Policy Institute at Occidental College and author of Food Justice, Norma Flores of the Association of Farmworker Opportunities Program and former child farmworker herself, and Joan Norman who employs farm workers on her farm (One Straw Farm) in Baltimore County.
